C is for.....

C is for.....Cereal

Seinfeld is one of my favorite TV shows of all time. Some of the best scenes took place in Jerry's kitchen. My eyes were always drawn to the cereal boxes in the background. Those boxes of cereal made me feel like Jerry and I had something in common, just two hip and happenin' guys who loved cereal.

My earliest memory of cereal is drowning Cheerios in sugar. I dumped so much sugar on those Cheerios, the excess would settle at the bottom of the bowl. I scraped the bottom with my spoon to make each scoop a sugary delight. When the Cheerios were gone, I happily knocked back the glorious sugarmilk remaining.

During high school, my friends and I often went out to lunch.  If we were strapped for cash, we would go to one of our houses to raid the fridge and cupboards. When we ended up at my house, we'd take this big mixing bowl we had and fill it with whatever cereal was on hand. Our favorite concoction was Lucky Charms and Fruity Pebbles. We creatively called this combination Lucky Pebbles. It still makes me smile to remember us standing around that mixing bowl with oversized serving spoons, the air filled with the sound of our crunching.

I probably ate more cereal in my 20s than I did as a kid. There were days when cereal was breakfast AND dinner. I still eat cereal for breakfast most mornings. My cereal of choice these days is Raisin Bran Crunch. I'm proud to say the girls have inherited my love of cereal. Meg and I try to keep the cereal choices fairly healthy, but I sneak in a box of Lucky Charms every once in a while as a special treat. Nothing like sharing a bowl of Lucky Charms with my kids. Who knows, maybe I'll introduce them to Lucky Pebbles one day.

  2. I probably eat cereal for dinner three times a week. I've got a little Jerry Seinfeld in me too.

  3. This has made me really hungry for cereal. Trix was my favorite as a kid, with Crunch Berries and Fruit Loops tied for second. I can't deny I still love all of them even though I try to eat more like an adult these days.

Love Seinfeld too, I'm amazed I can still laugh at the re-runs even though I can usually say the dialogue with them!

  4. Cereal is all kinds of goodness. I agree I ate more of it in my college years than all of my kid years combined.

  5. I too feel a camaraderie with Jerry (and now you) for being hip and happenin' cereal lovin' dudes. I've never liked sugary cereal though. Plain Cheerios and Rice Krispies are my favorite, but I'd never turn down a bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds for dinner!

  6. I can relate to the excess sugar! I was never a fan of cereal as a kid, and the only way I'd eat the Special K my mother presented me with was by drowning it in what I'm sure was a quarter cup of sugar! I loved the sugar "sludge" at the bottom of the bowl!!! Thanks for sharing!!!

  7. I haven't had cereal in years. Now you have made me dash back in the house to see if we have any in the pantry. Nope, no cereal. I wonder if Jerry is at home so I can knock on the door and ask to borrow a cup of cereal. Maybe the sugar since we don't keep sugar, and oh, we gave up milk awhile back for water and juice. So maybe Jerry will have cereal, sugar, and milk...

  9. When I was a kid, my mom wouldn't let us have much sugar cereal, but we could sprinkle a little bit on top of the non-sugar cereal. So...Cheerios with Apple Jacks. Or Rice Krispies topped with Golden Grahams. I'm still doing it. These days, I start with Grape Nuts, add some Corn Flakes and finish with Frosted Flakes.

  10. Mood: Well played

    LG: Impressive

Julie: I know the ad said Trix are for kids, but that is so 20th century thinking.

    OT: Ah, college.

    allison: Your restraint is commendable

Lynn: Sludge is the perfect word, wish I'd used it

Gregg: Thanks for stopping by Gregg. Wow, no milk or sugar huh? Not sure i could pull that off.

    Jeffrey: Indeed

    Squilla: Such a deprived childhood
