F is for..........

F is for..........Fargo.

If you're planning a trip, you might want to check out Fargo, North Dakota.

See what I'm sayin? Who doesn't want to be a legend? All kidding aside, this may be the best ad I've ever seen.

I would love to regale you with stories about wild nights in Fargo, but I've actually never been there. No, F is for Fargo because Fargo is one of my favorite movies.

The movies have given us any number of great female characters, but for my money, Marge Gunderson is the best female character in cinema history. Not one of the best, THE best.

There it is, gauntlet thrown. I've got Marge Gunderson. Who you got for best female character in the movies?

  1. She's hard to top, that's for sure. I'll have to think about this one.

  2. Love that movie... but when I saw your title and the image that popped up in my reader, I thought you were going somewhere else with your F word, lol. Thanks for keeping it clean ;-)

  3. No argument here - Marge Gunderson is my favourite, too. I saw the movie when I was pregnant for the first time and me and Margie just bonded over the buffet table. I love her smarts, her patience, her ability to eat double her own weight in food, everything about her. Not to mention the way she talks. A classic.

  5. I dunno, she's tough to beat! Maybe Ethel Thayer in On Golden Pond is in the running. I'm trying to visit all the A-Z Challenge Blogs this month.

    1. Ethel Thayer! Nice one. I love On Golden Pond, and Ethel should definitely be in the discussion for best female character.

  6. I saw that add for Fargo before and found it absolutely hilarious! Good marketing, I guess, since I usually think of Fargo as cold and not much to do besides getting killed by a wood chipper.

  7. How about Ruth Gordon in both Where's Poppa and Harold and Maude? Two of my favourite movies. Ever. Visiting from A-Z.

  10. Hello Tim,

Great post, I think I just found my new favorite blog. Love the way you write!

And Fargo is one of those cult classic movies. As far a favorite female character, sure did like Annette Bening in "Grifters."

I discovered your site (love your essay on education, bu the way) through the A to Z Challenge and am now a follower, but not in a stalker-ish way with binoculars and night vision goggles or anything like that ….

Feel free to take a peek at my blog too if you have time. I write humor, and people tell me I’m funny (maybe it’s just the voices in my head, that’s what the doctor told me this last time when he upped my meds again).

  11. hi, she is one of my favorites, too. But another favorite is the character played by Katharine Hepburn opposite Humphrey Bogart in "The African Queen". Have you ever seen that one? Great movie! Gotta go now, on to other blogs. Trying to see them all. Best regards to you. Ruby

  12. Fargo is a great movie, and ya know, Marge just might be the best female character on film. At least she's not a hot pants wearing, martial arts expert know it all.
